Paolo Muiesan Fellowship in Advanced HPB Surgery and Liver Transplantation

The Paolo Muiesan Fellowship has been created to enable young surgeons planning a career in HPB surgery / liver transplantation to spend six months at one or two expert center(s) under the mentorship of an ISLS Member-at-Large / Executive Council member.

The Fellowship is designed to provide both hands-on clinical training, and mentored clinical research that will lead to a publication and a presentation at the ISLS Congress.

Eligibility

  • Junior faculty surgeons (≤ age 42) who have completed residency +/- fellowship and who are currently working at a center where HPB surgery +/- liver transplantation is performed may apply.
  • The applicant must have the support of a supervising HPB +/- transplant surgeon at his/her home institution.
  • Both the applicant and his/her supporting supervisor must be members of the ISLS at the time of application.

Amount & Period

  • The duration of the fellowship is 6 months.
  • The stipend will be $1,500 per month + $1,000 airfare

Process

  • Applicants should submit via email to isls@isls-society.org:
    • A video introducing themselves, describing where they work and their current role, and outlining what they hope to achieve through this Fellowship
    • Their curriculum vitae
    • A letter of support from their supporting supervisor
    • The supervisor’s curriculum vitae
  • The Fellowship Committee will review the applications and invite those considered worthy of further consideration to an interview to be conducted either in person at an ISLS meeting, or via Zoom. In preparation for the interview the candidates will select their prospective mentor (who will be part of the interviewing team), and will develop a proposal for the research project that they would undertake with that mentor if selected. A Zoom meeting will also be held with the applicant’s supporting supervisor to discuss their suitability for the Fellowship.
  • The Fellowship Committee will present their recommendations at a meeting with the Executive Council, where the final selection will be made.
  • The awardee will sign a letter of agreement with ISLS, affirming that he/she will:
    • Submit a mid-term and final reports on the progress of the Fellowship to the ISLS office, which will be posted on the ISLS website
    • Present the research project undertaken during the Fellowship at the Muiesan Fellowship Ceremony held during a biennial ISLS Congress or Single Topic Symposium
    • Prepare a manuscript based on their research for submission to the ISLS official journal, The International Journal of Surgery (impact factor 10.3)
  • The fellowship may commence at any time after the award has been granted, but no later than six months after the selection.
